A fisherman is alive and well after a shark bite on board a vessel he had caught in his net during his normal fishing operations.

THE SHARK BIT THE FIRSHERMAN ON HIS FISHING VESSEL

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Gqeberha duty crew received a call-out signal at around 19:15 on Wednesday, 25 January 2023, for assistance.

An emergency call came from a fishing vessel, reporting a shark bit a fisherman on board a vessel. They caught the shark inside their nets off-shore of Gqebercha. The fisherman was busy with their regular fishing duties at the time of the incident.

Jonathan Tufts, NSRI Gqeberha deputy station commander, said: “The fishing vessel alerted Telkom Maritime Radio Services, MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre), and the Transnet National Ports Authority alerted.”

FISHERMAN SUSTAINED SHARK BITE WOUNDS

He said the local fishing vessel was heading towards the Port of Gqeberha from deep sea fishing grounds South of Cape Recife.

“NSRI Gqeberha launched the rescue craft Rescue 6 Alpha and rendezvoused with the vessel seven nautical miles offshore.

Tufts said the NSRI medics took the 36-year-old fisherman into their care.

“He sustained shark bite wounds that had been effectively treated by fellow crew first aiders. The patient was stable, in good spirits, and fully mobile.”

The NSRI transported the fisherman to its rescue craft and then to the rescue station in Gqeberha. There the EC Government Health EMS paramedics assessed the injuries.

EMS paramedics continued to provide medical care and transport the patient to the hospital in stable condition.
