Severe thunderstorms, rain and flood WARNINGS issued for most of SA on Friday

The SA Weather Service issued warnings for severe thunderstorms, rain and floods for MOST of SA on Friday. Here is the affected areas.

More disruptive rain and floods are expected in most of the country on Friday. 

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS, RAIN AND FLOODS ARE EXPECTED ON FRIDAY

The SA Weather Services (SAWS) issued several high-level warnings for: 

  • Eastern Cape 
  • KwaZulu-Natal 
  • Western Cape 
  • Gauteng
  • North-West
  • Free State 
  • Limpopo
  • Mpumalanga

HERE ARE THE WEATHER PREDICTIONS FOR THE EASTERN CAPE

Eastern Cape:

Level 5, 4 and 1 warnings were issued for disruptive rain were issued for the Eastern Cape for Friday.

“Flooding of roads, settlements, and bridges can be expected. Disruptions of traffic flow and municipal services and damage to property and infrastructure can be expected.” 

SAWS 

The SAWS furthermore warned that a danger to life is also a possibility.

MUDSLIDES AND ROCKFALLS ARE POSSIBLE

“Mudslides and rock falls are possible. Damage to mud-based and make-shift houses or structures can be expected.” 

These areas in the Eastern Cape will be affected by the level 5 warning: 

  • Inxuba Yethemba / Cradock
  • Enoch Magijima – Tarkastad / Tarkastad
  • Enoch Magijima – Molteno / Molteno
  • Enoch Magijima – Komani / Komani/Queenstown
  • Raymond Mhlaba – Adelaide / Adelaide

A LEVEL 2 WARNING WAS ISSUED FOR KWAZULU-NATAL

KwaZulu-Natal: 

A level 2 warning for disruptive rain was issued for parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday. 

The SAWS advised the public should postpone travel arrangements until it is safer to travel.

“Avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams. Monitor the weather conditions and, if need be, identify areas to safely store valuable items from flood water.” 

HERE ARE THE WEATHER CONDITION EXPECTED IN GAUTENG

Gauteng: 

A level 2 warning for disruptive rain was issued for parts of Gauteng on Friday. 

The SAWS furthermore said to avoid crossing flooded roads and swollen streams. Where rising water levels are observed, move to high ground.

Limpopo: 

A level 2 warning for disruptive rain was issued for these parts of Limpopo on Friday:

  • Makhado
  • Molemole / Dendron

  • Greater Letaba / Mooketsi
  • Greater Giyani / Giyani
  • Collins Chabane / Tshilamba
  • Greater Tzaneen / Tzaneen

Western Cape: 

A LEVEL 2 WARNING WAS ISSUED FOR MPUMALANGA

Mpumulanga: 

The SAWS issued a level 2 warning for disruptive rain for parts of Mpumalanga for Friday.

Free State: 

A level 2 warning for disruptive rain was issued for these parts of Free State for Friday:

  • Mantsopa / Ladybrand
  • Masilonyana / Brandfort
  • Setsoto / Ficksburg
  • Masilonyana / Brandfort
  • Matjhabeng / Welkom
  • Nala / Khotsong/Bothaville
  • Tswelopele / Tikwana/Hoopstad
  • Ngwathe / Ngwathe/Parys
  • Moqhaka/Kroonstad

TWO WEATHER WARNINGS WERE ISSUED FOR PARTS OF THE NORTH WEST

North West: 

The SAWS issued a level 4 and level 1 warning for disruptive rain for these parts of the North West province: 

  • Kagisano/Molopo / Tosca
  • Ratlou
  • Tswaing / Ottosdal
  • Mahikeng / Mafikeng
  • Ramotshere Moiloa / Zeerust

“If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and climb to higher ground. In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level.”
