Several waste pickers BURIED after landslide

Tragedy strikes: Multiple waste pickers were buried in a landslide at a Johannesburg landfill site on Thursday afternoon

On Thursday afternoon, 2 March, at 15:52, Netcare 911 responded to a landslide at the Ennerdale landfill site in Lawley, South of Johannesburg.

Waste pickers buried during landslide

According to reports, multiple waste pickers collecting recyclable materials were buried under a mountain-sized portion of the rubbish dump.

Emergency services were immediately notified and responded promptly.

The SAPS Search and Rescue, SAPS K-9 Search and Rescue, City of Johannesburg Fire and Rescue Services, City of Johannesburg EMS, and Gauteng Provincial Government were present at the scene.

SAPS K-9 conducted a combined search after a witness pointed out an area where one of the waste pickers could be.

At least four people suspected to be buried

Another waste picker stated that at least four other people were suspected to be buried under tons of waste.

Once the K-9 picked up a scent, they initiated digging operations.

They eventually found an adult male in a serious condition after some time.

Advanced life support paramedics treated the man on the spot, and he was transported to the hospital for further care once he was stabilised.

Although the search continued, it was called off due to poor lighting.

However, a recovery mission will continue on Friday, 3 March, to search for the bodies of the remaining victims.
