The highly anticipated murder trial of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa started from scratch on Tuesday, 18 July at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria with singer Zandie Khumalo as the State’s first witness.

When the trial was postponed in June, Khumalo was the last witness to give her account of what transpired the night Meyiwa was murdered. Retired judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng has also been roped in to preside over the matter.

ZANDIE TESTIFIES AT THE SENZO MEYIWA MURDER TRIAL

Meyiwa was shot dead on 26 October 2014 at the home of his girlfriend and singer Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus, Gauteng in an alleged botched robbery.

Meyiwa’s close friends Mthokozisi Thwala, Tumelo Madlala as well as Longwe Twala, singer Kelly Khumalo, her mother Ntombi Gladness Khumalo, her sister Zandie Khumalo and her two children Christian and Thingo were present when the goal keeper was shot.

Five men are on trial for the murder of the soccer star, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli. They face charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition. All five men pleaded not guilty as the trial has started afresh.

Court proceedings normally start at 10:00 and adjourn at 11:15 for a tea break. They resume at 11:30 and adjourn again at 13:00 for lunch and resume at 14:00. However, due to unforeseen circumstances on a particular day there are delays and sometimes court adjourns for either tea or lunch earlier than the set times indicated above.
