A new witness is expected to take the stand in the murder trial of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.

On Monday, 14 August, two police officers attached to the organised crime unit in the South African Police Service (SAPS) took the stand and detailed how they arrested accused 3 Mthobisi Mncube for a separate matter. They also told the court about evidence they collected in his residence in Cleveland including a 9mm pistol and live ammunition.

Meyiwa’s close friends Mthokozisi Thwala, Tumelo Madlala as well as Longwe Twala, his then girlfriend Kelly Khumalo, her mother Ntombi Gladness Khumalo, her sister Zandie Khumalo and her two children Christian and Thingo were present when the goal keeper was shot on 26 October 2014.

Five men are on trial at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria for the murder of the soccer star, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli. They face charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition. All five men pleaded not guilty as the trial has started afresh under Judge Ratha Mokgoathleng.

Court proceedings normally start at 10:00, adjourn at 13:00 for lunch and resume again at 14:00. However, due to unforeseen circumstances on a particular day there are delays and sometimes court adjourns for either tea or lunch earlier than the set times indicated above.
