The defence in the trial-within-a-trial of the five men accused of killing Orlando Pirates golakeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, is expected to cross-examine magistrate Vivian Cronje on Wednesday, 18 October.

On Tuesday, Cronje told the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria that accused 2 Bongani Ntanzi was not assaulted nor coerced by police to make a confession and that he was calm, relaxed and made eye contact as she took down his confession statement.

Last week a trial-within-a-trial- commenced to look into the admissibility of confessions allegedly made by accused 1, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and accused 2 Bongani Ntanzi.

As previously reported by The South African, Meyiwa was shot and wounded at the home of his girlfriend and singer Kelly Khumalo on 26 October 2014 in Vosloorus in an alleged botched robbery.

Five men are on trial at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria for the murder of the soccer star, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli. They face charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition.

All five men pleaded not guilty as the trial has started afresh under Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng.

Court proceedings normally start at 10:00, adjourn at 13:00 for lunch and resume again at 14:00. However, due to unforeseen circumstances on a particular day there are delays and sometimes court adjourns for either tea or lunch earlier than the set times indicated above.
