On Friday, 6 January 2023, a 45-year-old owner of a security firm is set to appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistarte’s Court for the possession of hijacked vehicles that were used in the attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery that occurred on Tuesday close to Boipatong.

Hijacked vehicles used in attempted CIT robbery

On Wednesday, 4 January, early in the morning, and attempted CIT robbery took place on Frikie Meyer Street, facing Sebokeng.

A charcoal Mercedes Benz is said to have rammed a G4S armored truck twice from behind.

The driver veered off the road into the nearby bushes. The armored truck allegedly came under gunfire.

The guards’ weapons were taken away from them. The suspects then unsuccessfully attempted to detonate explosives inside the armored truck.

Using various vehicles, they sped away from the scene empty-handed.

Specialised team succeeds in arrest

A crack team led by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime, Sedibeng Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team, and K9 Unit was established.

The team pounced at an address along Fowler Street in Vanderbijlpark.

Two of the suspected getaway vehicles, a white Audi A3 and a blue Hyundai Tucson, were discovered at the address.

Six 9mm handguns, bulletproof vests, and luminous jackets were all seized as a result of the additional inquiry.

Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, the Hawks’ provincial commander for Gauteng, has praised the investigation team’s tenacious work and welcomed the arrest.
