Gauteng Education Department suspends learner

The department took to Twitter on 14 November 2019, to let everyone know that the learner was suspended with immediate effect and that what she did was unacceptable.

The tweet read: “Department (GDE) has today suspended with immediate effect a 16-year-old Grade Ten girl-learner at Jan Viljoen Hoerskool for allegedly assaulting a 16-year old Grade Nine boy-learner on Tuesday 12 November 2019, at the said school after writing their exams.”

“We strongly condemn any misdemeanour in schools, which could lead to serious action being taken against a learner. We have dispatched our psycho-social team to provide necessary support to all affected by the said incident.”

Jacaranda FM debates the boys’ stance

On 14 November 2019, Jacaranda FM discussed the incident saying that what the girl did was a perfect example of hardcore bullying.

Rian, a radio presenter on Jacaranda FM said that everyone was commending the boy for being such a gentleman and not fighting back.

“I think whether its a male or female and the person is bigger than you, you should slap back,” said Riaan.

“The whole thing of I can’t hit back because she’s a girl should be thrown out the window,” added Rian.

A fellow presenter responded by saying: “I don’t know. I’m not disagreeing with you. I just think it’s a case of fight or flight. He was obviously so scared.”

Interview with bullied boy

Jacaranda FM went on to interview the boy who was bullied in the video.

“I wrote my ex-girlfriend a song. The bully never liked it and warned me that I must stay away from my ex-girlfriend,” said Brandon.

“She warned me to stay away. She always bullied me and I was always scared.

I went to the principal but he said I must be strong,” added Brandon.

Law Firm to help

As reported by the Randfontein Herald, Law firm, Marx and Associates offered their services free of charge to the boy who allegedly had fallen victim to bullying. This follows a video of the incident going viral on social media.

According to Sunette Marx, a partner in the law firm’s Family Law Department, plan to consult with the boy and his family so that a protection order could be obtained to protect him.

“He will need counselling by a psychologist to help him get through the ordeal. We are going to take action so that incidents of assault can be reported,” said Marx.

“The right steps need to be taken to make sure that this matter is solved in the right way. So many children have tried to end their lives in the last few months because of videos being circulated on social media.
