SASSA: R544 million lost through fraudulent claims in KZN

SASSA KZN has lost R544 million through fraudulent beneficiaries and has hired four companies to get back the money

Over 38 000 people have unduly benefited from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in KwaZulu-Natal, and now the agency is looking to get back over R250 million.

SASSA WRITES OFF DEBT

SASSA KZN spokesperson Sandy Godlwana says they have appointed four debt collection agencies to try and recoup millions from individuals who had misrepresented their financial standing.

The agency had lost out on R544million paid to fraudulent beneficiaries. However they have had to write off half of the debt as the fraudulent beneficiaries are unemployed.

The four appointed companies are  Ncube Incorporated Attorneys, Kumyolz Investments (PTY) Ltd, Credit Intelligence (PTY) Ltd and Markalio Revenue Solution (PTY) Ltd.

Godlwana has implored on all the debtors to not pay their debt collector. 

MEASURES IN PLACE TO CONTACT DEBTORS

“Under no circumstances should our clients pay money directly to the debt collection agencies. All outstanding funds should be paid directly into a SASSA account,” she says. 

Godlwana has asked debtors to go to their nearest SASSA offices once they have recieved their sms.

It is important that the clients complete a form where there will be an agreement in terms of the funds that will be paid.”

The debt collectors will be using different ways to get in contact with debtors but it will mainly be calls, tracing of debtors, sending short messages which SMS, letters and emails.
