SASSA grants can be collected at selected retailers, or withdrawn from any regional office. Payments can also be made directly into a grant recipient’s bank account, or to their card.

Can someone keep your social grant card?

Here’s what the law says about social grant cards and their ownership.

How do social grant cards work?

According to the SA Government, social grant (SASSA) cards work just like regular bank cards.

It means that social grant cards should be treated with the same care and security as any other bank card. social grant cards have one owner: the recipient of the grant.

Grant payments are made directly to the bank account, which the recipient can then access at any till-point or ATM.

A social grant card is meant to ease the process of accessing and withdrawing funds.

Can someone keep my SASSA card?

No!

Nobody is allowed to take possession (or claim ownership) of your grant card for any reason.

Only the social grant recipient in whose name the card has been issued may use or access the card.

If anyone has taken your social grant card (e.g. for outstanding loans), this is a crime and can be reported to the police. Additionally, this can also be reported as social grant fraud.

Someone took my card, what do I do?

If someone is holding your social grant card, the recommendation is to report it to the police as it’s a crime to withhold someone’s documents or personal cards.

It can also be reported as grant fraud via the National Hotline, and the same contact details can help grant recipients to have their cards’ functionality stopped in the event of theft.

Your SASSA card is yours, and nobody is allowed to ask you for your card – or your PIN.
