But what happens to your grant if you don’t collect it?

Social grants have an expiration date.

Here’s what you should know about how and when social grants expire.

Can my SASSA grant expire?

According to the South African Government’s website, social grants have an expiration date.

“The social grant lapses when beneficiaries fail to claim for a period of three consecutive months.”

If you have not collected your grant, the social grant will expire and must be applied for again.

The recipient will be informed through a letter or SMS before the future expiry date.

How to reapply or appeal

SASSA allows grant beneficiaries to re-apply for previous social grants within 90 days after the grant has expired.

If approved, grants will be paid as normal from the date of re-acceptance. Recipient whose grants have expired but have missed this 90-day deadlne to have it corrected, will have to follow procedure – and apply for their respective social grant from the start.

Applications have to be made in writing. The easiest way to do this, is to visit your nearest office with the correct documents.

How can SASSA help?

SASSA payments can be collected at selected retailers, or from regional offices. Grant recipients can also apply to have payments made into their bank accounts.
