SAPU to go on strike over wage demands

The South African Police Union (SAPU) warned that police officers could go on strike on Friday until their wage demands have been met.

SAPU UNHAPPY OVER 3% PAY HIKE

Sapu is unhappy with the implementation of a 3% pay hike from the government. The notice by the police union comes a day after the Labour Appeals Court interdicted the strike by Nehawu.

Health workers are demanding a 10% wage hike. The government has only put an offer of 4.7% on the table so far.

POLICE SPOKESPERSON ON THE PLANNED STRIKE

Sapu spokesperson, Lesiba Thobakgale says a notice to strike was given to the public service and administration department. The department has until Friday to come up with a new offer.

“We embarked on salary negotiations at the Public Service Co-Ordinating Bargaining Council last year whereas collective labour we demanded a 10% salary increase, but we didn’t agree with the employer until we logged a dispute in terms of dispute resolution.

 Thobakgale said that the strike will continue until the employer resolve the issues. She added that Sapu is making this call to the government, that since 2020 ‘our members never received a salary increase.’

“Can they do justice and come up with clear mandate that has a percentage to give to our workers so that we can resolve this empass before we go on a strike on 17 March? If not we are willing to go full force, our members are ready that is the line of march.”

Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union’s, Richard Mamabolo says that the union’s national executive committee will gather on Wednesday to make a final decision on the possibility of joining the strike.
