The South African Police Service ( SAPS) National Task Team on Political Killings says it has mobilised maximum resources to apprehend suspects behind the killing of an NFP councillor, Ntombenhle Mchunu.
SAPS CONFIRM INVESTIGATION OF NFP COUNCILLOR’S SHOCKING DEATH
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says at around 01:00 on Sunday morning, 30 July 2023, police responded to a shooting incident at the councillor’s place of residence in Nongoma.

WHAT HAPPENED TO NTOMBENHLE MCHUNU
IOL reported Mchunu was sleeping at her Nongoma home when gunmen broke in and fired several shots, killing her instantly before fleeing the scene.
“The 75-year-old councillor was declared dead at the scene while a minor child that was in the residence survived the incident,” she said.
“The minor is in a critical condition in hospital.”

APPEAL FOR INFORMATION
“A case of murder and attempted murder is under investigation.Anyone with information on this incident are requested to call the crime stop hotline on 0860010111, callers may remain anonymous,” she appealed.
The publication also reported that Mchunu’s death comes after another NFP councillor in the same municipality, Nonhlanhla Zungu, opened a case of attempted murder and assault with the police after she was attacked just as she returned from hiding after receiving death threats.
