Wait, what? It sounds a bit like something out of an April Fool’s sketch, but hey..

DJ Thabo Mahlare has launched a farting competition in his home town of Mamelodi in an attempt to address high substance abuse problems in the township.

There are even international farting competitions that offer as much as R87 000 cash prizes for the winners.

“I’m hoping people take this seriously enough to want to sponsor it so that we can send these kids to go compete internationally. Some people don’t realise that farting is a talent‚ and can you realise how different their lives could be if they were given the platform to try out their talents‚” Mahlare told the Sowetan.

Mahlare said he was trying to raise awareness about the dangers of nyaope (heroin) consumption.

“I’m tired of seeing the youth in my community perish due to drug abuse.”

If you’re not sure what farting and curbing drug abuse have in common, neither do we, but Mahlare reckons it’s some sort of distraction to keep drug users off the streets and away from stealing. He is hoping that a sponsor will come onboard to help get competition take off.

According to Stats SA Mamelodi East reported 1‚282 drug related crimes last year.
