RTMC’s Easter crackdown: Over 1000 arrests, 900 vehicles seized
Over 1000 road users arrested, 900 vehicles impounded across nine provinces since holiday period began Thursday.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has been relentless in its efforts to ensure road safety during the Easter holidays. More than one thousand road users arrested and 900 vehicles impounded across all nine provinces. Since the holiday period commenced on Thursday.
These operations targeted a range of offenses, including drunken driving, falsifying driving documentation, reckless driving, operating without permits, and overloading of goods and passengers.

Most notably, vehicles were impounded predominantly in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga for violations related to public transport operating permits.
The surge in traffic volume, particularly on Thursday and Friday, saw approximately 10 000 vehicles passing through various tollgates per hour on the N1 North and N3 South routes.
Similarly, the N4 East saw 1 900 vehicles per hour, while the N1 South witnessed an average of 1000 vehicles.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane highlighted the extensive efforts, stating, “A total of 75 961 vehicles were stopped and checked, with 916 927 drivers issued traffic fines for various infringements.”
Furthermore, he expressed concern over unroadworthy vehicles, noting that 274 vehicles with defects were taken off the roads.
Zwane emphasised the ongoing nature of law enforcement operations, stating, “Law enforcement operations are continuing throughout the holiday period along major routes and within residential areas to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.”
