The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) issues a stern warning to law enforcement officers, cautioning them against unacceptable behavior.
The RTMC emphasised the implications of bribery and corruption.

“Bribery, corruption, and other unlawful activities do not only tarnish the image of our traffic law enforcement fraternity; it leads to devastating consequences, including loss of life,” said the RTMC.
Recent events underscore the gravity of corruption within their ranks, exemplified by the sentencing of a Mpumalanga traffic officer.

The Ermelo Regional Court delivered a verdict after the officer solicited a R200 bribe from undercover anti-corruption agents during Project Arrive Alive on 22 January 2020.
The RTMC urges citizens to report suspected wrongdoing.

“The RTMC is calling for harsher sentences against officers who solicit bribes from motorists,” said the RTMC.
The convicted officer’s arrest followed on 3 March 2021, leading to a guilty plea and a R4000 fine or 12 months imprisonment. Additionally, a five-year imprisonment term was imposed, wholly suspended for five years unless a repeated offense occurs.

In a further step, the convicted officer faced a disciplinary hearing resulting in termination of employment.
Despite pursuing arbitration, “He took the matter to arbitration but failed to have the decision of the disciplinary committee overturned.”
This case serves as a stark reminder of the commitment to combat corruption within the ranks of law enforcement during this festive period and beyond.
