A video of a car causing havoc at News Café in Rosebank, Johannesburg on Friday night, 23 April, has surfaced online. The man allegedly tried to gain entry to the restaurant to see his ex-girlfriend and when he was denied by bouncers things took a nasty turn.

In a statement on Friday, News Café said the man, who was not a patron at the restaurant, arrived and caused a commotion by insulting, intimidating and antagonising customers. The restaurant’s security prevented him from entering the building but he returned later in a “fit of rage”.

“Thank you to our quick thinking team that immobilised the threat – in addition to everyone whom helped, from the security to the SAPS and our new neighbours Proud Mary,” said News Café in a tweet.

In the video, the vehicle crashes through tables and chairs but falls short of breaking into the building. Rosebank Management District vehicles and personnel can also be seen in the video, trying to bring the situation under control, which they managed to do eventually.

The man reverses through the upended tables and chairs and speeds off before he makes another collision and comes to a halt.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident but parked cars, the building’s façade and Rosebank Management District’s vehicle were damaged.

The 33-year-old man was arrested by the South African Police Services and faced charges of negligent and reckless driving in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 April.

“This man initially got into a scuffle with the bouncers. The next thing the waiter pushes me out of the way saying ‘this guy is about to drive into the restaurant’. He attempted to ram into the restaurant twice,” said one of the restaurant’s patrons in a tweet.
