Returning from holiday destinations? Here are helpful travel safety tips

Thousands of motorists have started occupying the roads as they return from holiday destinations of their choice after the festive season.

As you travel back home from holiday destinations – prioritise responsible driving, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC)  cautioned motorists.

HOLIDAY SEASON PHASING OUT AFTER THE NEW YEAR

Thousands of motorists have started occupying the roads as they return from holiday destinations of their choice after the festive season.

As safety is never guaranteed on South African roads, RTMC has provided a few vehicle safety tips in a bid to avoid challenges:

  • Whenever feasible, choose daytime travel.
  • Conduct thorough checks to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy.
  • Prioritise seat belt usage to ensure safety for everyone.
  • Thoughtfully plan your journey to maintain safe road usage consistently.

RTMC REPORT: TRAVEL ARRESTS THIS FESTIVE SEASON

Meanwhile, The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) reported that more than 4160 motorists have been arrested since the start of the festive season.

According to RTMC, the majority were held for drunken driving while others were detained for producing false documents and driving public transport contrary to operating permits.
“Public transport operators are again reminded that their drivers have proper documents to drive and the vehicles are used on permitted routes and are not overloaded,” the entity cautioned.

RTMC also reported that more than 1738 vehicles have been discontinued and 3340 impounded since the start of the festive season on 1 December 2023.

Furthermore, RTMC also warned that severe consequences will faced by those found operating contrary to the rules.
