Resident owing over R200 000 caught reconnecting

Shortly after he was disconnected for owing the municipality, the resident phoned his go-to electrician to sort out the ‘problem’.

A resident who owed Msunduzi Municipality over R200 000 was caught red-handed illegally conducting electricity reconnection.

RESIDENT WHO WAS CAUGHT DEFIES MUNICIPAL PROCESSES

According to Msunduzi Local Municipality, the resident’s electricity supply was disconnected for owing R230 968, 03, however, he later managed to find an individual who then confirmed that the suspect has in numerous occasions requested his services of illegally reconnecting electricity.

The Electricity Department officials who were leading the #QoqamaMillion disconnection campaign explained that the two males were to be handed over to the nearest police station and consequently formally arrested.

WHAT IS THE MSUNDUZI DISCONNECTION CAMPAIGN ABOUT

Operation QoqamaMillion has been in full swing in Pietermaritzburg – disconnecting services to institutions and residentials that owe the City millions of rands due to non-payment since last year.

Notable successes of the operation were the disconnection of services to a police station and government offices.

Plessislaer Police Station, one of the worst-ranked stations in the province, was disconnected by the municipality last year for owing over R3 Million.
The municipality also disconnected a government department owing more than R600 000 on rates. Also, the illegal connection to electricity was disconnected. The department was also accused of infringing on the municipality bylaws for having accessed the meter.
Coincidentally, Msunduzi municipality reported that the Home Affairs, which they disconnected previously, was found to have illegally reconnected, with an 11kv switch gear supplying the building locked. However, cables supplying the electricity to the transformer were disconnected.
Raisethorpe Secondary School, in the northern suburbs, also was targeted for disconnection for owing the Municipality over R2 Million.
