Residents of Limpopo have up until midnight to stock up on alcohol following the announcement of a curfew by the provincial government.

The Limpopo government is adamant its new liquor law will help curb crime in the province.

According to the MEC for Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism, Rodgers Monama, the alcohol curfew is in the best interests following police reports of high fatalities after midnight.

‘THE NEW CURFEW WILL HELP CURB CRIME IN THE PROVINCE’

The department said it needs to play a critical role in reducing alcohol abuse and supporting moderate home drinking instead of unsafe nightlife, within carious drinking outlets which continue to serve our people alcohol during hours beyond midnight.

WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT THE NEW CURFEW:

From 1 August, the sale of alcohol in the province will be prohibited after midnight.

Monama told the media that several stakeholders, including the Department of Health, are on board with the law.

“People are quite happy and excited about this new law.

“I think we’ve been very fair and consultative in the process to ensure that we also contribute meaningfully.”

In April, eight people were killed in a motor vehicle accident in Limpopo. The crash occurred along the N1 Highway northbound towards Musina.

The Limpopo Transport Department said a taxi and bakkie were involved in the accident. The taxi allegedly attempted an unsafe overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into the bakkie.

“Five men and three women make up eight of those who lost their lives. Eight other people who sustained injuries are being transported to nearby health facilities for medical attention,” sai the provincial department of transport and community safety.
