We are fast approaching the middle of the year, and it is easy to forget when school terms end and begin again. So here is a reminder of the school calendar for 2023 and the public holidays. 

HERE IS A REMINDER FOR THE 2023 SCHOOL CALENDAR AND PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

The Department of Basic Education published the 2023 school calendar, which kicked off on 11 January 2023 for learners in inland schools, while coastal schools started a week later on 18 January.

The 2023 school year comprises 199 school days across the four terms, with 32 days for school holidays and eight public holidays.

THE DATES FOR THE SCHOOL TERMS

The dates for the school terms are as follows:

Coastal schools

  • Term 1: 18 January to 31 March
  • Term 2: 12 April to 23 June
  • Term 3: 18 July to 29 September
  • Term 4: 10 October to 13 December

Inland schools

  • Term 1: 11 January to 24 March
  • Term 2: 12 April to 23 June
  • Term 3: 18 July to 29 September
  • Term 4: 10 October to 13 December

Meanwhile, South Africa will have 14 public holidays in 2023, including an additional two days off to celebrate public holidays which fall over a weekend.

HERE ARE THE PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN SOUTH AFRICA IN 2023

Here are all the public holidays in 2023 in terms of the Act:

  • Sunday, 1 January: New Year’s Day
  • Monday, 2 January: Public holiday New Year’s Day observed 
  • Tuesday, 21 March: Human Rights Day
  • Friday, 7 April: Good Friday
  • Monday, 10 April: Family Day
  • Thursday, 27 April: Freedom Day
  • Monday, 1 May: Workers’ Day
  • Friday, 16 June: Youth Day
  • Wednesday, 9 August: National Women’s Day
  • Sunday, 24 September: Heritage Day
  • Monday, 25 September: Public holiday Heritage Day observed 
  • Saturday, 16 December: Day of Reconciliation
  • Monday, 25 December: Christmas Day
  • Tuesday, 26 December: Day of Goodwill
