Ramaphosa: “We need to reduce the severity of loadshedding”

President Ramaphosa said that efforts are underway to decrease the impact of load shedding, with Eskom now implementing fewer power cuts.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged to mitigate loadshedding severity by implementing lower stages of power cuts through Eskom’s efforts.

Speaking at the Reconciliation Day event in Limpopo, he emphasised the need for extensive measures to end load shedding.

Ramaphosa detailed extensive steps to tackle the power crisis, like eliminating licensing barriers for private energy investment and improving Eskom power stations.

The strategy also involves promoting solar investments for homes and businesses.

While acknowledging a decline in load shedding severity over recent months, Ramaphosa stressed the urgency to intensify efforts, not just for immediate relief but to prevent future energy shortfalls.

Renewable energy projects contribute positively, with Minister of Minerals and Energy Gwede Mantashe announcing a bid window for 7,615 MW of renewable energy, gas, and battery storage.

Kusile’s unit 2 returned to service, and unit 5 is set to connect to the grid by year-end.

DISCUSSIONS TO CLOSE ISRAELU EMBASSY

President Ramaphosa also addressed the conflict in the Middle East, urging Israel and Hamas to seek a solution.

Referring to the long-standing Palestinian-Israeli tensions, he emphasized the need for a just and lasting peace, advocating for reconciliation.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly between Israel and Hamas, prompted parliamentary discussions on closing the Israeli embassy.

Ramaphosa met with the South African Jewish Board of Deputies to address concerns, reiterating the call for an end to the war.

Ramaphosa’s stance aligns with South Africa’s support for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

He emphasised the need for both sides to come together and reconcile after enduring decades of dispossession, occupation, and discrimination against the Palestinian people.
