RAF fraudster expected to pay monthly payments

A bad move of trying to commit fraud at RAF, has left a man with a criminal record and a fine to pay off in monthly instalments.

A drunk guy who fell and suffered injuries felt he could get a good settlement from the Road Accident Fund (RAF) by claiming to be a victim of a hit-and-run.

He now has a criminal record as a result of the bad decision, and he must pay a fine in installments.

On Thursday, the Gqeberha new law court sentenced 56-year-old Mzwandile Patrick Msutwana for RAF fraud.

How much was the fraudster claiming from RAF?

According to Capt Yolisa Mgolodela, a spokesman for the Hawks, Msutwana filed a claim with the RAF in June of last year for more than R2.2 million through his attorneys. He said that while in New Brighton, he was walking when an unidentified vehicle struck him.

The assertion raised red lights for the forensic investigation branch of the RAF, who forwarded the case to the Hawks’ severe corruption investigation unit.

According to TimesLive, hospital records from the Dora Nginza and Livingstone hospitals found during their investigations, “he was injured at his house when he fell as a result of being drunk.”

Msutwana received a R100,000 fine, with a three-year suspension.
On the day of his punishment, plans were made for him to pay R3,000, then R1,000 every month after that.

Last month, an ex-police captain from Mpumalanga was found guilty of fraud and corruption after conspiring with a crash victim to steal money from the Road Accident Fund (RAF).
