With the stress of matric results now over, the weight of securing tertiary funding will be lifted off the shoulders of 4000 underprivileged matriculants from Gauteng’s no-fee schools, thanks to an R560 million bursary scheme.

At a ceremony held in Vodaworld, the Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi revealed that the students will funded through the Gauteng City Region Academy.

ALL-INCLUSIVE BURSARY

The one-of-a-kind bursary covers tuition, books, accommodation, transport allowance, a once-off laptop allowance, and a living allowance. It also covers undergraduate studies as well as postgraduate studies.

Lesufi says the recipients will acquire skills which in future, they will plough back into the Gauteng economy.

“Through the GCRA Bursary Scheme, we are investing in the development of skills of the future. We are arming our youth with the skills which will ensure our country is competitive and contribute to the economic development of Gauteng,” says Lesufi.

“We have challenges in society that only these learners can fix for us. This will be the generation that provides new ideas, local products and solutions for our province.”

Many of the beneficiaries come from townships, informal settlements and hostels.

Lesufi says the bursary is not capped per student. If their chosen field of study may cost R300 000, the scheme will pay for it.

“I am bringing to you a bursary that is unmatched. A bursary that doesn’t have any limit. If you want to study a course that costs R300,000, we will pay.”

“The reasons are simple: we want you to be the best, we care a lot, and you are highly talented, and this talent must be nurtured.”
