R20 doesn’t seem like a lot of money to most people, though for some South Africans it could be their whole food budget for the day.

Someone who asks for change or spare cents might have to make R20 stretch further than the person who gave it to them might know.

What do some of South Africa’s snacks and canned goods cost – if this is what you have to spend?

Here’s what the amount can get you to eat at some of South Africa’s most popular retailers.

KFC Coleslaw

According to the menu at KFC, their classic coleslaw is listed for just R19, 90.

A popular option for consumers, it might not make much of a great meal on its own with only a small amount of money to spend.

Chips

Potatoes are a South African staple food, and that’s because they can be a good source of quick energy and carbohydrates.

Unless there’s a chisa nyama closeby, you can find chips at most chain stores like Sausage Saloon. Here, it costs R20 for a serving of chips, with or without sauce.

Sunbake Sliced White Bread

You will pay approximately R15, 99 to be more exact. Unfortunately, bread doesn’t make much of a meal on its own – and if that’s all you had to spend, that only leaves R4 for any toppings.

Drinking yoghurt can be a good way to stay on the move and get your energy levels back up. But what are you going to pay for a small serving?
