Matetela Monareng, aged 24, and his younger brother Mohau, 21, made their first appearance at the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court, in QwaQwa, on Wednesday 12 February for murder.

According to QwaQwa police spokesperson Brigadier Sam Makhele, the two brothers were arrested on Monday 10 February after it was reported that they had slashed their father’s throat during a scuffle.

Makhele revealed that Matetela was the one who alerted authorities of the incident.

“A 24-year-old complainant came to the police station to report a domestic violence-related incident at their house. The police went with the complainant to his residence and on arrival, they found a body of a man lying on the ground with his throat cut and multiple stab wounds to his upper body,” Makhele noted in a statement.

It was established that Mohau had gotten into an altercation with his father, 49-year-old Nono Monareng and things escalated into a violent and bloody confrontation.

“During preliminary investigation, it was alleged that the deceased youngest son was fighting with his father which ultimately led to the stabbing. Both brothers were arrested, detained and charged with murder,” the QwaQwa police spokesperson added.

While Mohau is believed to be the one who was involved in the altercation with his father, QwaQwa authorities have reason to believe that his older brother, Matetela also played an active role in the murder.

Consequently, both brothers were placed under arrest and charged with murder.

At this time, the motive is still not known, QwaQwa police confirmed.

The province’s top cop, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane expressed her condolences to the Monareng family for losing a father and children to a tragedy that could have been avoided.

“We appeal to our members and their families to utilize services of the Employee Health and Wellness to assist with their domestic-related challenges instead of resorting to violence. Our heartfelt condolences to the family and colleagues”, she said.
