This follows an incident that took place on Wednesday, 20 September 2023, where 90 learners from the said school were hospitalised after consuming muffins that were suspected to have been laced with dagga.

SUSPECTS WHO SOLD SPACE MUFFINS TO PRIMARY SCHOOL LEARNERS ARRESTED

As previously reported by The South African, approximately 90 learners from grades R – 7 consumed what looked like muffins, suspected to be laced with dagga, which they bought from a street vendor on their way to school.

Educators reportedly witnessed strange behaviour from the learners in class and immediately called emergency services for necessary support. Emergency services on school premises attended to all 90 affected learners.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said they applaud the police for their swiftness in arresting the suspects.

Chiloane said they are hopeful that they can apprehend more scrupulous individuals who may be involved in this criminal act, which can stand as a deterrent to others who seek to peddle drugs to learners.

“We are grateful that most of the affected learners are recovering and wish those who are still not well a speedy recovery,” Chiloane said.
