One of the world largest zoo’s and undoubtedly the biggest zoo in South Africa, the National Zoological Garden, commonly known as the Pretoria Zoo has allegedly fallen into disrepair.

The zoo is also the only one in the country with national status, however that has done little to ensure its up keep.

According to social media complaints, it seems the zoo is a far cry from its glory days.

Other social media users echoed similar sentiments, follow recent visits to the zoo.

“Pretoria Zoo should be closed down and animals rehomed to sanctuaries” says environmentalist Ulrich Janse van Rensburg.

@scare_the_crow says “The animals that are there must be sent to sanctuaries and the zoo closed. It is cruel and inhumane to keep animals in unkempt shoddy conditions.”

In response, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, which helps run the zoo says, the facility is undergoing refurbishment, which has been taking place for the last two years.

“Major renovations which will still take a couple of months includes our Stormy Bay, where the seals are kept, white rhino night rooms and our owl exhibits. Where possible, animals are moved from their enclosures to alternative enclosures within the zoo during construction. Unfortunately some animals have had to be moved to off display areas”, SANBI said in a statement.
