In parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the atmosphere was one of jubilation and tears of joy as the local community witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony for a long-awaited community health centre.

The event, attended by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane, and UMkhanyakude District Municipality Mayor Siphile Mdaka, marked a significant milestone for the region.

Construction kickstarts healthcare access improvement in KZN

The commencement of construction for the community health centre represents a crucial step towards improving healthcare access for residents.

Premier Dube-Ncube emphasised the project’s importance, stating, “This marks a turning point in healthcare access for our community.” By bringing essential medical services closer to home, the centre aims to alleviate the burden of travelling long distances for healthcare needs.

One notable aspect of the project is its commitment to providing a wide range of healthcare services tailored to the community’s diverse needs. From disease screenings to specialised services for male health, the centre will offer comprehensive care under one roof.

The health centre construction will create over 300 jobs

Premier Dube-Ncube also highlighted the economic benefits, noting that the construction will create over 300 jobs.

Furthermore, speaking at the event, Premier Dube-Ncube stressed the importance of fair employment practices. She urged merit-based hiring regardless of political affiliation or locality.

“We need to ensure that employment in these facilities is based on merit,” she emphasised.

The right to quality healthcare for all residents

Health MEC Simelane echoed the sentiment, emphasising the fundamental right to quality healthcare for all residents, regardless of their location.

Additionally, she reassured the local community that priority would be given to them during recruitment for construction work.

The Department of Health anticipates the completion of the health centre within the next three years. She is promising improved healthcare services for residents in parts of KZN.
