Police slammed for prioritising celeb GBV case

The police have been accused of favouring celeb GBV cases over ordinary citizens suffering from the scourge everyday.

The prompt response by police to attend to actress and deejay Thuli Phongolo’s assault case by fellow celeb and boyfriend DJ Maphorisa has rubbed ordinary citizens the wrong way.

POLICE ACCUSED OF FAVOURING CELEB GBV CASES ONLY

Thuli laid a charge with the Sandton SAPS after she was assaulted by her lover and saw the police act promptly to arrest the accused only for the complainant to file a withdrawal of the case.

Many on social media have questioned the police about the bias treatment when handling celeb Gender-based violence (GBV) cases versus the ordinary public.

Gender-based violence (GBV) in the country is at its highest, with unattended and/ neglected cases resulting in dire consequences.

“In hindsight, this matter has proven that police, especially in the cities can rescue victims of GBV unless this is all done because of clout-chasing,” Sipho Zulu added his view.

DJ MAPHORISA BACK IN COURT NEXT MONTH

NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane alleged that on Sunday, 7 May, Maphorisa assaulted his girlfriend Thulisile Phongolo by hitting her with open hands and strangled after she confronted him about an incident that happened the previous night where he was booked to perform. 

Real name, Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe (DJ Maphorisa) appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 May facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

The case was remanded to 14 June for DJ Maphorisa to lodge representation to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in light of the withdrawal statement that has been filed by the complainant.
