A police officer was shot and killed, while two other officers were injured as two alleged hijackers made their way to Lesotho.

Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, police spokesperson said the ordeal started when a police officer was hijacked by the two armed men outside his house in Ratlou, Thaba Nchu.

“The officer was shot in the hand and his white Toyota Hilux stolen. He was referred to the hospital in Thaba Nchu and later transferred to Bloemfontein.”

Makhele said the stolen white Toyota Hilux was spotted in Wepener by an on-duty Warrant Officer.

“The stolen vehicle was stationary, seems to be experiencing a flat tyre.

“The officer stopped and called the station to circulate the registration number to confirm if it’s the stolen bakkie.”

Makhele said while the officer was on the phone, the two armed men approached him and requested assistance.

“When the men realised that officer was enquiring about them on the phone, they allegedly shot him through a slightly opened window.

“The officer was shot on the right side of the head and the bullet went out on the left and hit a civilian lady (33) who was with him in the vehicle in the stomach.”

He said the 53-year-old officer died at the scene and the injured woman was transported to a hospital in Bloemfontein.

The two men stole the service pistol of the officer before they attempted to leave the scene in the stolen white Toyota Hilux.

“As the men were attempting to leave the scene a 36-year-old police officer passed the scene with his private vehicle.

“The suspects approached him to request a wheel spanner. Realizing that he is a police officer since he was wearing a police uniform, they fired shots and he was hit in the shoulder.”

Makhele said the injured officer returned fire and managed to find cover at the correctional service centre whilst requesting backup.

The two armed men fled the scene and tried to drive the stolen white Toyota Hilux bakkie with a flat tyre towards Lesotho but failed.

“The vehicle was later found abandoned near Tsupane road in Wepener. “

He added that the injured officer was referred to a hospital in Bloemfontein.

“No one has been arrested and the case will henceforth be investigated by the Hawks in Bloemfontein.

All other critical units were roped in and will work around the clock to track the suspects.”
