Police nab 125 wanted suspects in the Northern Cape

Police in the Northern Cape will officially launch Operation Shanela at the Marino Stadium in De Aar on Tuesday

Police in the Northern Cape have made 422 arrests as part of Operation Shanela in the last four days including 125 wanted suspects. The multi-disciplinary high density operation had an emphasis on the reduction of contact and violent crimes and property related crimes in hotspots areas.

The suspects were arrested for various offences including contravening the Firearms Control Act, possession of dangerous weapons, attempted murder, robbery, assault, burglary, theft out of motor vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol, malicious damage to property, dealing and possession of drugs as well as illegal dealing in liquor.

The teams across the province searched 3666 vehicles and 8385 persons were stopped and searched and also executed 2656 high visibility patrols

3540 compliance inspections and random visits to liquor premises, second-hand dealers, scrap metal dealers, formal and informal businesses, farms as well as mines were conducted.

DRUG DEALER ARRESTED

Meanwhile in the Western Cape, high density patrols resulted in the arrest of a man on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and the possession of drugs.

Police followed up on an address in Delft and upon arrival at the address they saw cash and a consignment of drugs on the table in the living room, already packaged and ready for distribution. They arrested and detained a 59-year-old man on charges of dealing in drugs and resisting an arrest.
