The South African Police Service (SAPS) said it is looking into a video that was reportedly filmed in Krugersdorp in the West Rand of Gauteng. The footage shows men dressed in uniform wrestling a high school learner into the back of what appears to be an unmarked vehicle.

On Thursday, 5 August, at 9:54 the SAPS Headquarters said it is aware of a video circulating on social media involving a high school learner in Krugersdorp.

“The SAPS Gauteng Provincial Office is attending to the incident,” said the police in a tweet.

The 30-second video clip begins with a man dressed in police uniform dragging a girl dressed in school uniform towards the vehicle. She manages to briefly break free but the man is undeterred and eventually lifts her to her feet and wrestles her to the backseat on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, another man dressed in police uniform – and carrying a holstered firearm – positions himself between the tussling pair and another girl in school uniform. He then opens the door of the vehicle to help the other officer force the girl into the backseat and shuts the door.

Social media users called out the apparent police officers for manhandling the girl. The full-face, balaclava-like, COVID-19 mask worn by the man seen as the aggressor also raised a few eyebrows.

This is a developing story.
