A woman was allegedly hijacked at gunpoint by three unknown suspects at about 9:20 in Zeekoe Road, Grassy Park, on Thursday, according to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.

“The suspects jumped into the complainant’s vehicle and fled the scene in her Toyota Fortuner,” said Swartbooi.

The woman reported the hijacking to the police and the tracking device in her vehicle was activated. Later, members of the SAPS Flying Squad spotted the vehicle – which was occupied by the suspects, aged 17, 36 and 37 – and a high-speed chase ensued.

The spokesperson said the driver of the vehicle ignored several calls to stop and even bumped into other motorists’ vehicles as he fled from police during the chase.

Swartbooi said the officers in pursuit of the hijacked vehicle fired “numerous gunshots” before the SUV was brought to a halt in Ottery. The three suspects were found in possession of an imitation firearm.

“Once charged they are expected to make a court appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate Court on a charge of hijacking,” said the police.
