For those who were convinced the ANC’s secretary-general, Ace Magashule was centred in the alleged plot to overthrow President Cyril Ramaphosa, it was unsettling to hear the spearhead of the Free State branch speak highly of his leader.

Ace Magashule confuses the enemy with Ramaphosa praise

The Daily Dispatch reported that

Ace Magashule was speaking at a media briefing on the outcomes of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the weekend. Magashule said working under Ramaphosa had been a ‘pleasure’.

This despite recent revelations in the Sunday Times, which reported that former president Jacob Zuma had held a clandestine meeting with staunch backers, including Magashule and former North West premier Supra Mahumapelo, at the Maharani hotel in Durban.

In the wake of the NEC meeting, public spats between the two senior leaders of the ANC seem like a figment of our imagination.

It is as if Ramaphosa had never said this in his COSATO address:

“[ANC] leaders should not spend time on counter-revolutionary machinations of weakening this African National Congress… in dark corners”.

Magashule joins hands with Ramaphosa to call for unity within ANC

Well, nonetheless, at the media briefing, Magashule came out singing praises and calling for unity within the organisation.

“The NEC in the main had occupied itself with the unity of the organisation and the challenges facing South Africans. Those were the issues which really preoccupied the NEC, including the issues of the job summit and the economic recovery plan.

“Whatever issues are supposed to be dealt with, officials will deal with them. Between me and [Ramaphosa], we are working together, we are united”, he added”

Singing positive tunes about the president, Magashule further went on to state that

“Me and [Ramaphosa], we won’t allow any wedge-drivers to come between us. We will stay focused and we are going to work together. Ramaphosa is the leader of the ANC and therefore serving under him as SG has always been a pleasure.”

Magashule also confirmed that he and the president had met with the ANC’s national chair, Gwede Mantashe and the economic sub-committee chair, Enoch Godongwana regarding their alleged involvement in the closure of the Gupta family’s bank accounts, an allegation that arose from the commission of inquiry into state capture.
