The family of the late Metro FM news presenter Pearl Shongwe has confirmed that she passed away in her sleep.

The 35-year-old was reportedly found dead by neighbours in her apartment in Polo Fields in northern Johannesburg, Gauteng.

Pearl Shongwe was also a presenter for SABC 1’s talk show Daily Thetha. She previously presented sport on SABC’s 404 News channel and co-hosted Morning Live on weekends alongside Simphiwe Ncongwane.

Family spokesperson Khehla Tshabalala said it is with great sadness that the Shongwe family announces the untimely passing of their beloved daughter Ntombifuthi Pearl Shongwe.

“Our daughter was a celebrated radio broadcaster and TV presenter. Her presence will forever live on in our hearts,” he said.

The family also asked for privacy to mourn her passing during this trying time and said further details will follow in due course.

Condolences have poured in for the much loved news presenter from celebrities including former colleague DJ Fresh and actresses Leera Mthethwa and Millicent Mashile as well as Metro FM listeners.

“The vivacious Pearl Shongwe was worth her salt as a newsreader – both TV and Radio. I’ve seriously hoped she would evolve, display more of her versatility and leave a firm mark in many facets of the 4th Estate. Rest easy Lady,” @mothibithabo said.

“Mara emang pele! That voice? Her wit? Sharp mind and tongue? Humour? Comedic timing? Her ability to engage without being overbearing? Her positive energy will remain unmatched. The Broadcasting industry has lost a gem,” @LeeraMthethwa tweeted.

“Pearl Shongwe was a brilliant journalist. Always enjoyed her sharp questions, remarks & jokes when she was teaming with Mo Flava & Owen on the morning show,” @Mskabzela tweeted.

“Pearl Shongwe’s laughter was contagious man. Death be not proud. Strength to her family, friends and the Metro FM family,” @i_Thabang also tweeted.
