There was a sense of lawlessness in the air for Limpopo this weekend, as several drivers performed spinning routines in the middle of a busy intersection. The incident, believed to have happened in Malamulele, has ended up going viral online – and it’s a terrible look for SAPS.

Limpopo lawbreakers ‘run rings’ around cops

The police officers had left their vehicle parked across the crossroads. Any attempts to restore law and order fell flat almost immediately. Several cars were parked up in defiance against the cops.

A white bakkie then enters the picture, and the motor – complete with two passengers in the back – make life a nightmare for the officers on the scene. They run rings around the stranded SAPS wagon, pulling off donuts and other intimidating manoeuvres as the rest of the traffic in Malamulele looks on in disbelief.

In fact, it wasn’t just the bakkie that decided to turn this intersection into their own ‘spinning playground’…

Limpopo spinning: Anti-police sentiment swells in SA

Police were eventually able to disperse the crowds, but not before they were left with egg on their face. The brazen disregard for law enforcement officials comes at such a sensitive time for both SAPS and the rest of the country. Last week, a 16-year-old disabled boy was shot dead by police – who allegedly tried to cover-up the killing.

The cops deemed responsible for the death of Nathaniel Julius are due in court on Monday morning, following days of unrest in Eldorado Park. Whatever course this case takes, locals are demanding justice for a teen who lost his life so tragically – and relations between citizens and the police remain strained.
