Joost van der Westhuizen was one of the rugby world’s most popular stars and known globally as being completely focused on his game. Joost was an unusually powerful scrum half and helped propel the South African Springboks to victory in the 1995 Rugby Union World Cup.

He died on 6 February 2017.

In one of his last interviews, van der Westhuizen said: “Rugby was the first half of my life; I’m playing the second half now. I was arrogant when I was playing, without knowing who I was. I have learned more about life in the last five years.”
