How Gauteng’s ‘back to school’ plans are assisted by the Church of Scientology

South Africa’s Church of Scientology – based in Gauteng – has contributed to the provincial education department’s back to school strategy.

On Thursday, officials in Gauteng revealed how they planned to get children back to school. Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has extensively listed how pupils, teachers, and parents will be kept safe as the country takes its first tentative steps into the next level of lockdown. But what does the Church of Scientology have to do with this?

Lesufi and his colleagues concluded their proposals, which are in line with guidance from the national government. On Tuesday, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga stated that pupils in Grade 7 and Grade 12 would be the first to return to their classrooms, beginning on Monday 1 June.

How the Church of Scientology ‘supports’ back to school plans in GP

Through a combination of feverish work, extensive research, and collaborative efforts on a grand scale, Gauteng has become the first province to announce its plans for the resumption of school activities in full. But there’s a missing element here; they’ve also had help from private donors, and that includes the Church of Scientology.

South Africa has a small presence of Scientologists, but in Gauteng along, there are four separate churches dedicated to the contentious religion. The organisation – and those who run it – have been accused of bullying and intimidation of their followers, but every allegation levelled against their leadership has been denied.

Private backers for the Gauteng Government

So to see their name pop up on a private donors list for the Gauteng Government’s back to school proposals is a little eye-catching, to say the least. The following institutions have made funding contributions:

  • Bidvest donated funds for the disinfection and cleaning of 577 school sites with governance challenges.
  • Wall Mounted Sanitizer Stands and Sanitisers for 1 253 classrooms and 1 154 digital temperature thermometers – two for each of the previously mentioned schools – have also been paid for by Bidvest.
  • Redwards Financial Services is sending 12 000 N95 masks to different schools across the province.
  • Finally, the Church of Scientology paid for the disinfection of 35 key locations for the Gauteng Department of Education, including three head offices, three satellite offices, 14 teacher centres and 15 district offices.
  • These locations were all deemed ‘essential’ in the bid to get schools ready before the 1 June deadline.
