Women Rock Day is celebrated on 3 January, on this day we celebrate the amazing women in the music industry

History behind women rock day

Women Rock Day is observed in honor of Aretha Franklin becoming the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Since then, the day has been observed annually.

The goal of Women Rock Day is to raise awareness of, and encourage, women who are breaking down barriers.

These women are also making a difference in the music industry.

While many have seen significant progress in closing the gender gap, music remains highly unequal.

In 2014-2015, women composed less than 2% of the programs performed by major US orchestras.

Take some time to encourage some aspiring young female musicians who may want to make musical history in the future.

Taking a look at some of these women

Tina Turner’s career began in the mid-1950s and lasted more than five decades before she retired in 2009.

She is one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, having sold over 200 million records worldwide.

Janis Joplin was one of the first female artists to challenge the stereotype of the “girl singer” in folk and pop music in the 1960s.

She influenced many musicians by fusing rock and blues into her music.

Joplin’s career took off when she performed with Big Brother and The Holding Company at the Monterey Pop Festival.

Chrissie Hynde was chosen by a record label owner based on her demo tape after many unsuccessful attempts to get her name out there.

The label put her in a band with a few others called ‘The Pretenders.’

After releasing their self-titled debut album in 1979, the band became one of the forerunners of the ’80s New Wave movement.
