How ANYONE ever managed to drive this thing is beyond belief: A wrecked taxi – complete with doors hanging off – has been taken off the road.

Police officers in the Western Cape were left open-mouthed this week, after they flagged a wrecked taxi that was – somehow – still driving on a major commuter route. The unsafe vehicle is now in the possession of SAPS.

Wrecked taxi causes concern amongst police officers

The incident occurred in Worcester, which is about two hours east of Cape Town. Cops were able to get the motorist to pull over, and they grilled him about the state of his taxi. Needless to say, the two parties had some VERY differing views about the term ‘roadworthy’.

The driver protests that his taxi is fine, but the officers on the scene list a litany of problems. From the video footage shared with us on Thursday, we can see that the backdoor of the vehicle is barely hanging on, kept in place solely by some improvised ropework.

There is extensive damage to the front of the car, which has bits of its bumper missing. Comically, there’s no windshield to be found either, and one of the cops can be seen resting his arm on the taxi’s dashboard, despite being on the outside.

The crumpled bodywork on the driver’s side completes a very sorry story. There are dints in the roof, the side-doors, and even above the rear tyres. Scuff marks and scratches decorate the rest of the taxi, which also boasts a back-end that is folding in on itself.

It’s as good as miraculous that this car was still going at the time of its detainment. We can only hope that no-one has been harmed as a result of travelling in this death trap, and the safest place for a vehicle like this is definitely the impound lot.
