There are two scams going around online regarding Pitbulls that the NSPCA has warned locals about.

NSPCA warns of scam offering a reward for Pitbulls

The National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) stated that a post is circulating on Twitter offering a reward to people.

In the post, from an unverified government account, the poster says those who report the addresses of where pit bulls are kept will receive a reward of R1 500.

The NSPCA stated that this post appeared to be a scam. The Public Relations officer for the NSPCA Keshvi Nair told IOL that the post was highly questionable.

Locals are urged to report the post

Nair explained that not only does it come from an unverified account but it has no contact information attached.

She added that the viral post does not state why there was a reward for the Pitbulls or why they were being so urgently sought.

“The post places Pitbulls and their owners at risk. If you have come across the post, please report it,”

said Nair.

People are also attempting to impersonate SPCA staff to take the dogs

Nair also spoke about people trying to impersonate SPCA staff.

She stated that these impersonators demand that people hand their Pitbulls over. Nair says that this is also a scam.

“This is also a scam. The SPCA is not going door to door and demanding that people hand over their Pitbulls,” she said.

She further urged pet owners to be both vigilant and safe. Nair cautioned people against handing their animals over to unknown people.

In addition to the above, the NSPCA says that people who are unable to care for their pets should take the animal to their local SPCA or animal welfare shelter.
