Only six days left before the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) closes its extended application window, as a reminder echoed by the organisation.

The NSFAS board recently extended the deadline for student financial aid applications to 15 February 2023. This decision followed discussions with the South African Union of Students (SAUS).

Acting Chair Laurens Van Staden and SAUS President Yandisa Ndzoyiya extended the application period until 15 February 2024. This ensures students have ample time for financial assistance applications.

In addition to extending the application deadline, it was decided that the NSFAS Loan Scheme would be open from 2 February to 15 February 2024.

This move aligns with the implementation of the new Comprehensive Student Funding Model. It is designed to provide support to a broader spectrum of students, including those not previously covered by NSFAS policies.

Under the revised model, students from families with annual incomes exceeding R350 000 but not surpassing R600 000 are eligible for support.

Furthermore, in a joint statement issued, it was clarified that students who previously applied for the NSFAS bursary need not reapply for the loan scheme.

The organisation will automatically consider those who did not meet bursary eligibility but meet loan eligibility criteria for a loan.

“All students who did not meet the bursary scheme eligibility criteria, however, meet the loan scheme eligibility criteria, will be automatically offered a loan for their consideration,” the statement said.

The decision streamlines applications, ensuring eligible students get necessary support. NSFAS urges prompt submission before the approaching deadline, preventing missed opportunities.
