As captain of the Springboks, Siya Kolisi has just led the team to back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles; making him only the second main to achieve that feat after the great Richie McCaw, and making the Boks only the second team to retain the Webb Ellis Cup after the All Blacks did so in 2015.

Kolisi was selected as Springboks captain in 2018 by then head coach Rassie Erasmus, who serves as director of rugby these days.

Over the last couple of days, many social media users have credited Rassie Erasmus his exceptional dedication and commitment to transformation with the Springbok team.

But on Wednesday, Mbalula took exception to one such viewpoint and openly challenged contradicted it.

“Those who followed rugby will know the struggles black players faced, being called qouta players. But arrival of Rassie Erasmus made sure that if you are good enough you get selected regardless of the colour of your skin. He deserves all the recognition,” wrote X / Twitter used @Tabile_Zukile.

Mbalula, who was Minister of Sport (2010-2017), Minister of Police (2017-2018) and Minister of Transport 2019-2023) and currently serves as ANC Secretary General, responded with the following message:

“Its not Rassie who did away with quotas its me bcos they were counter productive,We entrenched the transformation charter hence u see Siya been the captain. But i understand your point and fully agree about your assertion about Rassie.”

Social media users were quick to shut him down and shut him up for his hot take.

One said: “I think this is an even better example of that ‘There are two kinds of leaders’ meme. Claiming credit where none is due. Rassie on the other hand, takes no credit. Doesn’t lift the trophy. Wheeps quietly. Gives others the credit.”

Another added: “This bruddah is quite possibly one of the worst humans ever born. My dawg SARU (SA Rugby) was on the brink of BANKRUPTCY when you were minister of sport???”

“It’s giving: ‘I made Siya Kolisi… I’m the reason the Springboks are back to back champions’. You truly can’t outgrow main character syndrome.”

“Not this fool trying to claim responsibility for the culture within the springboks camp. These ANC politicians are shameless,” another said.
