Graduation season is upon us! And you guessed right, that means tears of joy from graduates, proud parents, and other shocking things students do on stage when conferred. This week the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) in Umlazi, Durban, held its graduation ceremonies. It will be memorable for many because Nosipho Ngidi shocked everyone when she got on stage with two huge bags of chips. Why, though?

For three years while studying towards a Diploma in Office Management and Technology, Ngidi from Ndwedwe in the west of Durban sold chips on campus to make ends meet.

According to the university, Nosipho Ngidi was raised by a single mother, and with the money she made from selling chips; she managed to fund her studies and build a house for her family.

Ngidi said qualifying is remarkable as she is the first graduate in her family.

“I am the first to study at a university. I advise others that it does not matter where you come from. Your background should not determine your future,” she said.
