A 43-year-old woman has appeared in court where she was charged in connection with the kidnapping of a teenage girl, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West has said.

Iran Mathonsi (43) appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court, on Thursday, 17 August 2023, to apply for bail. The court ruled against Mathonsi’s bail bid.

“She will remain in custody until her next court appearance on Thursday, 24 August 2023, for a formal bail application. The accused’s court appearance stems from her apprehension by the provincial Crime Intelligence Unit and Gauteng Highway patrol members on Tuesday, 15 August 2023, after information about a suspected Silver Ford Figo was operationalised. The said car was traced and stopped in Randfontein,” said SAPS North West spokesperson  Adele Myburgh.

SAPS: TEENAGE GIRL KIDNAPPED IN MARIKANA

According to North West SAPS, the 17-year-old girl was kidnapped in Marikana on Sunday, 13 August 2023. The girl, who was forced inside a Ford Figo boot, was later released after ransom money was paid.

Police have said the investigation into the matter is ongoing and cannot rule out the possibility of linking the suspects with other cases.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, welcomed the arrest and subsequent appearance of the suspect in court.

“He also thanked all the members involved for their dedication and quick response, which led to the arrest. He reminded all women to be wise and choose safety above situations that can cause them harm and that police will continue the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV),” Myburgh said.
