The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport mourns the tragic loss of nine lives — ANC supporters — following a devastating bus crash in Paulpietersburg, under the eDumbe Local Municipality in Zululand.

The bus, carrying African National Congress (ANC) supporters, was returning from the ANC’s Mayihlome Rally held at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium when the accident occurred around 5:00.

The incident unfolded approximately seven kilometers before reaching eDumbe town from R34. Law enforcement teams at the scene have confirmed nine fatalities, with efforts underway to recover the bus completely.

Several other occupants sustained injuries, with four reported as critical, all of whom have been transported to a local hospital for treatment. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, with authorities deploying experts to aid in forensic analysis.

MEC Sipho Hlomuka conveys condolences

Expressing his deepest condolences, MEC for Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka, extended sympathies to the ANC and all affected families.

“After such a hugely successful rally in Moses Mabhida, we are now waking up to such painful news,” MEC Hlomuka stated.

MEC Hlomuka urged heightened caution on the roads, particularly among public transport operators, emphasising the paramount importance of road safety for all.
