Nine arrested for counterfeit cigarettes worth R6. 6 million

Police said nine people were arrested, and counterfeit cigarettes worth R6.6 million were seized in Kliprivier, Vereeniging, on Saturday.

Police seized counterfeit cigarettes worth R6.6 million in Kliprivier, Vereeniging, on Saturday and arrested nine people.


Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said police received information about suspicious activities at a smallholding in the area.

“On 09 October 2021, police operationalised information received on suspicious activities occurring at a certain plot.

“Upon the arrival at the said premises, nine suspects were found offloading counterfeit cigarettes from a big truck into smaller trucks. The value of the cigarettes is estimated at a street value of approximately R6.6 million.”

Sello said the case would be handed to the Hawks for further investigation.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela commended the members for their swift response and also thanked the public for their continuous support in the fight against crime.

Meanwhile, in the Western Cape, police arrested a man for dealing drugs.

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk said a 32-year-old suspect in an intelligence-driven operation on charges of dealing in drugs on Friday, 08 October 2021.

“The members received information, operationaliSed it by conducting a search at a flat in Voortrekker Road, Goodwood. Members discovered a total of 3050 Mandrax tablets, bags of cocaine, and tik in one of the bedrooms in the flat.”

Van Wyk said the value of the drugs is yet to be determined.

“The suspect is due to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate court on Monday, 11 October 2021 to face the charges against him.”
