The latest COVID-19 data shows that the hot-spots in South Africa are beginning to migrate out of Gauteng, and are now springing up in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Provincial Premier Sihle Zikalala confirmed that the region has replaced Gauteng as the national epicentre for disease, and Health Minister Zweli Mkhize is also wary.

In the past eight days, KZN has seen its COVID-19 cases increase by 50%. It is recording some of the highest daily infections rates of anywhere in Mzansi, and only Gauteng has more active cases to report:

  • Fatalities: 614
  • Total cases: 64 061
  • Still active: 42 196
  • Last daily increase in positive tests: 3 529
  • Percentage of active cases in SA: 24.3%
