The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) says they are flabbergasted by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to increase salary for office bearers.

This was after the government refused to increase civil servants’ lack of money.

NEHAWU CALLED ON RAMAPHOSA TO IGNORE COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION

Last week, Ramaphosa gave the green light to increase office bearers’ salaries by 3%. Slightly lower than the recommended 3,8% as advised by the Independent Commission.

Speaking to SAfm, Nehawu national spokesperson Lwazi Nkolozi says office bearers should not receive an increase.

“There is absolute no justification why public office bearers should be getting a remuneration increase,” says Nkolonzi.

“We are angered about this decision that he has taken. We would have preferred zero percent. We do not believe that public office bearers deserve a salary increment.”

Nkolozi has accused office bearers of being the cause of issues the country is faced with.

“Imagine how much a minister, deputy minister, deputy president or a judge earns in this country, and we are giving them 3%, amid the challenges that ordinary South Africans and workers have due to the cost of living in this country”, Nkolozi adds.

Office bearers eligible for the salary hike includes the president, ministers, traditional leaders, judges and magistrates.
